Why Long Covid?
What is Long Covid?
Long Covid is a spectrum of symptoms, which may appear weeks or even months after contracting the disease. Long
Covid can occur to anybody who has had COVID-19, or if the infection was minor, they had no prior symptoms. People with long covid report experiencing different combinations of these symptoms:
- headache
- muscle and joint pain,
- general weakness
- fatigue,
- a combination of nausea and abdominal discomfort
- Palpitations ( Increased heart rate or beats)
- Brain fog (Confusion)
- Anxiety and Depression
….etc
Long covid is called in other names too, they are listed below.
- Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection
- Post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC)
- Chronic Covid syndrome (CCS)
- Long haul COVID
Long covid requires medical help from medical professionals such as a doctor if it continues for several months severely. On average Long Covid lasts for about 6-8 months and the severity of the symptoms can either be mild or severe. Some people may recover fully from a long covid, while others may suffer more serious side-effects such as long-term sickness, or worse, permanent disability. Shortness of breath is one of the most common symptoms of long covid; shortness of breath can affect any part of your body but is more widespread in the lung areas. People feel shortness of breath when they are sitting, walking, or otherwise exercising, or when they are getting themselves warm, and other types of physical activity. If you experience shortness of breath when you are inactive or are getting warm, try to do some exercises that will release excess oxygen into the lungs, such as some cardio-vascular exercises. This is probably the easiest thing you can do to avoid the onset of long-term CO(Carbon Monoxide) poisoning and to make sure you are doing everything you can to fight against this potentially fatal condition. The most important thing you can do if you notice this symptom of long covid is seeking medical attention immediately, as the sooner you can start treating the symptoms the better. However, some medical practitioners think that Long Covid without multiple symptoms is harmless. They add that it is normal after contracting a deadly, man-eater virus like SARS-CoV-2.
Is Long Covid seen in every recovered patient?
No, some post covid symptom studies and data say that 1 in 10 patients are likely to experience this.
People at High Risk
People at higher risk include older people, women, and those who had five or more symptoms in the first week of becoming ill with Covid-19 were more likely to develop long Covid.
Research also indicates that people with lung diseases also pose a higher chance of getting Long covid. Asthma is one such disease that needs to be considered.
Causes:
Still, it is unclear why this is experienced by some and not by some. However, a review by the UK's National Institute of Health Research hypothesized that the long covid symptoms undergone by some patients might be due to 4 syndromes, namely:
- Permanent damage to lungs and heart
- Post Intensive Care syndrome
- Post viral fatigue, otherwise regarded as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or simply chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Continuing covid-19 symptoms
It is observed that post-infection syndromes have been reported for some other viral diseases in the past, such as
- Ebola
- Chikungunya
- Malaria
...etc
The verdict:
Even though it seems mysterious to us, doctors and medical experts say it is a common condition to have after contracting a disease that weakens our immune system this much. It is important to consult a doctor if the symptoms persist. And it is very important to have monthly checkups, it is highly recommended for high-risk people.
Let's avoid another wave by staying indoors, wearing masks, sanitizing regularly and socially distancing.
Stay home and stay safe.
